Babies and Bath Water

The previous blog (The John 38ers) praised Bill Gaither, his Homecoming Friends, and the Homecoming concert series. Praise for the manner in which these concerts bless viewers with touches from the Holy Spirit. Touches conveyed through the tears of some. And through the cannot-stay-seated, fist-pumping cries of others. Touches from the Holy Spirit that empower the viewer to resist lusts of the flesh:

I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh (Galatians 5:16).

Citing the age of the artists and their songs, some have questioned the impact that these dated artists and songs will have on today’s youth. A seemingly valid question. If this were only about the outward form. If this were only about the artists, and their 1990s leisure suits and hairstyles.

But this is not only about the outward form. It is so much more about the inner. It is so much more about the Holy Spirit and His inner-working power to deliver believers from lusts of the flesh (Galatians 5:16). And no one captures these movings of the Holy Spirit on camera better than the Gaither Music Group. No one.

I need to be careful that I do not throw the babies out with the bath water. I need to be careful that I do not throw the earlier Gaither Homecoming apps out with the 1990s leisure suits and hairstyles. A Good Reminder:

It’s not about the hair and suits.
It’s all about the Holy Spirit!
