Everyone lost their balance when the ship pulled again. They heard shouting outside and ran upstairs. They were almost forced below by the force of the water battering the ship. A torn piece of sail slapped Peté in the face.
Skipper rushed to help one man secure a line whipping in the wind, hurried to the top deck to support his first mate wrest the wheel, then ducked as a beam swung wide, all the while roaring orders, frantic to save his ship.
The next moment, a ferocious wave roared over the ship. The hull groaned and yielded with a deafening crack. The men were thrown to their hands and knees as the ship ran aground upon the rocks, shattering the timbers and tearing the ship into pieces. Water rushed in, pounding at the men as they scrambled to get out.
‘There!’ Frankie cried, his heart lifting at the sight of an island only a short distance away. He wasted no time jumping into the cold water.
