I can still hear the children’s laughter as we played in the big “backyard” strewn with the trash that joined the many apartment buildings in our courtyard in the Florida Housing Project. I spent many hours running around and around in the backyard. I was so happy to be outside. And, I did not mind all the trash because being able to play outside was the most important thing to me. Being inside our tiny stuffed cigarette smoke-filled (from Daddy’s cigarettes) apartment was like torture.
As the sun was setting, just like clockwork, Mama came to the open kitchen window and called for my sisters and me to come inside. I immediately knew that the fun was over. We had no choice but to stop playing and go inside.
Many years later, I appreciate Mama’s desire to protect us by requiring that we come inside early. I know that Mama wanted to keep us safe from all the things that often happen after dark.
Allow me to share a verse from one of Mama’s favorite passages in the Bible, Psalm 23:4 “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me” I pray that as you read your Bible daily, you will find comfort from this passage and many others. Be encouraged! God is in control! Blessings
