Sleep with Faith and Wake with Hope
In my book, Once There Was a Girl: A Memoir, I share that my hopes and dreams sustained me daily as I struggled to survive while living in poverty and surrounded by crime. I spent a lot of time dreaming of a better day.
I was sitting here and thinking about the difficulties of this current time. I thought about how my faith in God sustained me daily (and still sustains me). Also, I thought about how I went to bed with dreams of better days ahead. In addition, I thought about how my daydreams often took me to another world where I had sufficient food to eat and did not worry about being bullied.
How about you? Have you lost your dreams? Have you lost hope? There is a beautiful old song composed by Mitch Leigh and sung by Andy Williams, To Dream the Impossible Dream, that encapsulates a desire to persevere and never give up, as quoted below.
To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go
To right the unrightable wrong
To love pure and chaste from afar
To try when your arms are too weary
To reach the unreachable star
This is my quest to follow that star
No matter how hopeless, no matter how far
To fight for the right without question or pause
To be willing to march into hell for a heavenly cause
And I know if I’ll only be true to this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I’m laid to my rest
And the world will be better for this
That one man, scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
To fight the unbeatable foe
To reach the unreachable star
This song, so beautifully written and filled with encouragement, makes me reflect on one of my favorite Bible verses, Hebrews 11:1. “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
Focus on this verse: As you go, prepare for bed, think of your dreams, pray about your situation, and keep hoping for a better day. Dream what seems to be an impossible dream. Sleep with faith and wake with hope.
