Reflections of a Believer
Breakthrough vs. Grapefruit
What you hear is important.
For the last few days, we have been watching church online due to a quarantine. Today our pastor got fired up. As he was preaching, my son turned to me with a look of total confusion across his face and said, “Mommy, what does he mean we will see a grapefruit?”
For a moment, his question did not register. Grapefruit? He didn’t say anything about grapefruit. Once I realized what he was talking about, I turned to him and corrected what he heard. “No, he said, ”We will see a breakthrough.” Satisfied with my response, we moved on.
This simple illustration shows how important it is to hear things correctly. One word can change the whole context of a sentence.
That being said, if it is so important to hear what is spoken clearly, how much more important is it to hear what is communicated to you through the Holy Spirit?
The Bible tells us, “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
John 14:26 NIV
See, the Holy Spirit is our guide. He will use the things that we have gleaned from scripture, sermons, and teachings to guide our path. But, how do we know if we are hearing the Holy Spirit correctly?
We must be in relationship to clearly discern the voice of the Holy Spirit. As I mention in my book, The First 30 Days, being in a relationship with the Holy Spirit requires more than just treating the things of God as you would a casual acquaintance. You cannot simply visit God once or twice a week to fulfill a religious obligation and expect to have a meaningful relationship with the Trinity; God , Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.
The more you want to hear from the Holy Spirit, the closer you have to walk in relationship with the Trinity. It is a daily renewing of your mind to His Word as stated in Romans 12:2.
Then, as you grow in relationship with the Trinity, the easier it becomes to discern what the Holy Spirit is speaking to you. See, as your relationship grows stronger, the more you understand about the character of God. The more you understand about His character, the easier it is to hear that still small voice.
The Bible promises us, if we are followers of Christ, we will hear his voice. John 10:27 KJV says it like this, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:”
So, to hear His voice and discern What is spoken we must be in relationship with the Trinity.
Today I ask you, are you able to hear from and understand the Holy Spirit? If not, have you evaluated your relationship with the Trinity to makes sure you are more than just an acquaintance?
Father,
We humbly come to you today and ask for your grace and mercy. We pray that you show us where our relationship with you is lacking. Please help us to hear from and understand what the Holy Spirit is speaking to us. Help us to draw closer in relationship to You. Amen.
